I went camping for four days.Didn’t find a single bear out & about.I was heading back home when I spotted this big boy sleeping away! I recognized him immediately! It was “Big Red”! He’s the only bear that makes me nervous. He tries to stare me down instead of scooting away. He’s a older male bear,so I’m guessing he’s a tad long in the tooth when it comes to humans.
Oh boy, bear season begins!
OH BOY INDEED!
I wondered when they came out of hibernation.
Believe it or not Doug,…bears do not hibernate. It’s more a technical difference. They go into what is called “Torpor” state. When a bear is in a torpor state the sleep is not as deep. They can wake up but animals who are hibernating cannot. The respiration is faster & their body temperature is higher as well.
I’ve heard from friends that they’ve seen bears out & about now for weeks.
Thanks for the information! I didn’t know this.
Guess he decided to take a nap in the sun – they do like to sun themselves, don’t they?
they sure do! With the black fur they must be warm.
He looks like he is relaxing. First bear you saw this year? I’ve got a soft spot for bears and have collected teddy bears for years.
ya,who doesn’t love bears! & a baby bear is just too cute!
I’m looking forward to seeing more bear photos from you, especially the cubs. I was wondering why you called the bear “Big Red” then I saw you tweeted he had mange and his fur grew back in red. Now I know.
Yes,his fur looks pretty good!
That’s good … but admire him from afar and stay out of this brute of a bruin’s way!
you don’t have to suggest that twice Linda!
Bears! <3
you wouldn’t want to go hug this guy.
He looks grumpy. And those claws… oh, my!
well……….I did wake him from his afternoon nap.So I don’t blame him for being a grumpy bear Jacquie!
Lovely to see – you’ll be catching up with some familiar faces soon, and meeting new cubs!
I hope so Adam!
We see lots of bears in the north – sometimes they just lie in the road and you have to wait for them to move! :)
You would see different types for sure. Are you far enough north for Polars?
No, I’m not far enough north – but hybrids are starting to appear (even here); polars are mating with other bears. A total sign of global warming.
a Pizzly or a Grolar for a Polar & a Grizzly. They have observed this happening in zoos as well.
He does look like he’s got quite the personality!
in Spades Id’ say Sheryl!
Hello, Wayne! That bear picture was long over-due. I can’t wait to see piglet and dear peg.
me too! I will be waiting for good weather first. We have been under overcast/rainy conditions now for 4 days & it looks like another week or so to go?
Sorry! Our winter started last October and we are still getting cold weather and snow.
What a capture!
thank you,I saw him laying down as I was heading out of Rankin cove in my boat. He was being shy.
What a lovely and lucky sighting, Wayne.
He’s a shy bear.I’ll look for him next time I’m over that way.
How wonderful to be so intimate with the bears that you recognize them, Wayne. And camping for four days, only to find him on your way out; I always marvel at that final siting at the last minute when I’m out and about too. Fantastic photo, my friend–
I can’t believe I missed the first bear post! As you know, I wait for them every year. The thought of cuddling with eagles just doesn’t work. :)
not only did you miss it,it was over a month ago. (April 3 rd) Where have you been?
I was sick for a bit and it’s thrown everything off.
well,..we all missed you.
Thank you!
