MY FRIEND “SALTY” (RIP)

20120206-20120205-IMG_6220This beautiful creature was murdered by a local RED NECK! Two wolfs were found shot & thrown away in a local garbage dumpster!
I found out today that one of the wolfs shot & than thrown in a local dumpster was “SALTY!The other wolf was one of her three pups! Her partner “Pepper” & two other pups survived the attack!
It appears that a local REDNECK (Graham somebody who works for Botting. He operates the crane) went out & for no valid reason, shot her dead & one of her pups! She never harmed anyone & never even came into town.
This stupid redneck went out & on purposely shot her & her pup dead! Than went to shore & picked up the body’s. He than delivered them to the woman who’s dog was killed by other wolfs.(Jenson Bay pack) She didn’t want them,so they were unceremoniously thrown into a local dumpster!
These two wolfs will be greatly missed by the rest of their family!!
The wolfs (Jensen’s Bay pack)that were coming into town were being feed for years by another redneck. He died & with the wolfs than not being fed, they continued further along the shore into town looking for their food. I can only assume that when they didn’t find their food, they killed 3 local dogs.
Five wolfs have been murdered now!
It took me 2 years to be able to enter into their flight zone! All animals have a flight zone.If you enter it & they don’t feel comfortably about that, they simple disappear into the forest! They leave.
I’ve been very patiently hanging near the edge of their zone for years. They finally allowed me inside several years ago. Now some stupid SOB has murdered her & one of her pups!
My friends are dead….!!

UPDATE: January 10th,2013 – I just found out that the guy who shot Salty was found dead! He shot himself!

SALTY

20120531-20120205-IMG_6220-2I shot this on February 5th 2012. It is of a female wolf I knew for several years. I didn’t know it at the time but this was the last time I would ever see her! She was shot by a local redneck! She & one of her cubs.
Than they both were thrown into the garbage like trash! Cosmic karma caught up with this redneck a year later when he blew his own head off!
I miss her very much & am constantly watching out for her partner “Pepper”. Pepper brought up the two others cubs & now they are bigger than he is & have the same coat as their mother!

“Salty” At Sunset

I originally shot this on the 5th (Sat.) of February. The weather has been very poor lately to say the least! So I thought you might like to see a shot of “Salty” that I haven’t shown before. I took about 500 shots of them both on this day. I will always remember this day! I’ve only dreamed of getting a wolf at sunset! But I didn’t get one wolf,I got 2! These opportunity’s do not present themselves very often! So I took advantage of it!
She had just left her mate “Pepper” & was walking westward down the beach. I saw this large wooden tree trunk in soft gold light & waited for her to walk into my framing!
I love the softness of the light! Very delicate tonal structure.

Salty & Pepper

The clouds & rain dampened any thoughts of me getting out for a shoot today! There may be a slim opportunity tomorrow? If it does come out I may be able to get a rainbow shot because they are calling for scattered showers with some sun!

I took this shot last Sunday down in Browning Pass. They seem to be most active in this area.
I noticed that Pepper was looking to the west a few times at something! I looked with my binocs & couldn’t see anything further down the shore! I’m pretty darn sure he something………….. I didn’t!
Maybe some fresh shots tomorrow evening folks?

Bye Pepper…….Hello Salty

Pepper disappeared around the corner into the thicket, so I swung around to catch up to Salty. I went ahead of her & shut the motor off at shore. I stayed very still & quiet while she went by. I did this several times. It worked great!
The sun was moments away from setting at this point. She walked into the shadows & I had to boost my ISO. I didn’t like the colour & because the rest of the shore was darkened,I booked it.
I thanked her & she continued on her way. She was walking towards the Den. Her pups could be at the Den? Someone else must of been pup sitting I suppose?

Salty

I originally shot this last Sunday.
I didn’t get out today because of too much cloud. The next week looks poor for both weather and photo opportunity’s!
I’m always hopeful for small breaks in the clouds however!
Salty was heading east past Ginnard point in Browning Pass when I came across her. I wish I could run into her or for that matter any wolfs more often! She has a great disposition but her mate “Pepper” doesn’t!
Typical male!

Lions,Eagles & Wolf ….OH MY!

I got out today and immediately headed down the inlet to Cannery Bay.
I ran into “Salty” at Ginnard Point and stayed with her as long as possible. The tide was coming in but the shallows stopped me from getting close & if I hopped out of the boat, she would of high tailed it out of there!
It was great to see her! She was by herself. Not sure where her mate “Pepper” is or the pups? The Pups should be getting big by now!
I was thinking of checking out where I believe their “Den” is. I thought they had moved on.
I do not want to put my scent around their home and spook them off. Think I’ll stay away.
I actually tried something I always wanted to do in this scenario!
Because she was trotting along the shore happily,I went down the shore ahead of her 2 klicks or so and pulled the boat up to shore. I than took my camera and hid behind a large rock on the shore! When she would came by I would be in a excellent shooting position!
I had my binocs as well to keep track of her.
Unfortunately she never appeared! She couldn’t of seen me around the corner put in & I even took off my red jacket so as not to be seen as easily!
It was worth a try.
I said goodbye to her (wherever she was?) & continued on to visit with the Lions.
When I arrived, I was very surprised to find that there were only a few hanging around! It was sunny and they should of been lazing around!
They must of been out grabbing a bite?
I got a few of the ones that were there and headed back into town to visit with my finely feathered friends. I saw Angie & Logan on their perch just before Tsapee Narrows and stopped to shoot a few and say hi.
I continued on to Deadman Island to visit with Romeo & Juliette. They both were active tonight. Even Juliette came over from Deadman to greet me as I arrived! Thats the first time I’ve seen her do that! Romeo does that from time to time but never Juliette.
I got some great shots of them both in their element!
The sun had set and I headed back. I’ve noticed the last few days that the Geo-Duck boats have been unloading at the dock at sunset. Obviously a “opening” is happening at the moment.
Another great day in paradise folks!

Black Wolf Cruising (Pepper)

I was able to get out today. I saw thicker cloud coming my way and decided I better make a move.
I went down to Tsappee Narrows to see if the Daredevil or Delilah was home. He was,she wasn’t.
This wolf was as well and was passing through their territory!
When I arrive at a given location, the first thing I do is get the exposure.
I take a guess at the exposure and check it. Well I didn’t even know this, but on my check shot I accidentally took a shot of this wolf! I saw it a second after, but I didn’t see it initially! How embarrassing! I need to pay more attention to the shoreline!
This wolf is one I call Pepper! Last time we met he wasn’t very happy with me. I stumbled upon his Den accidentally,or at least I assume it was his Den. I haven’t gone into the forest to check it out. I do not want to put my scent around his Den if he is still using it?
After it walked across this small beach,I saw it go up into the forest and because I know that shore line,I knew that it was probably cruising and going to cut across the point and come out on the other side!
The only problem was that this shore line was in the shade! I zipped around the point, cut the motor, got the exposure(1000 ISO at 1/250th,f5.6) and lay in wait.
I also know that they use this point to swim to the other side of the channel. It’s the closest Meares island comes to the mainland of Vancouver island. I have heard from several people that they do use this narrow crossing to do just that, cross!
Well,I waited half a hour and it didn’t show. It should of taken mush less time to do that distance! Which meant that it must of spotted me on the other side. I think it just stayed in the bush. Thats my guess?
When a animal is swimming,it is very vulnerable. So ergo you do not go in the water when another animal is in the water!
They are very smart creatures and not to be underestimated! I was glad to get what I did!
By this time that thicker cloud had moved in and the light went bye bye!
I got a few of the Daredevil and a Heron. That was it for tonight! Not much, but the wolf made up for that!

The “EYES” Have It!

I remember camping up in Algonquin park (Opeongo Lake). I always try to camp on islands to minimize animal traffic around camp.
One night someone howled to see if there were any wolfs around. We got a answer back almost immediately, and than another over there and another over in a different spot!
A hour later I shined the flash light towards the shore and remember seeing 7 pairs of these piercing eyes staring back at me!
I didn’t sleep well that night.

Pup Playing

I stumbled upon this pup! With the tide being high,I was in the shallows. This spot appears to be a play pen (as it were) & I stumbled upon it. This is one of three pups that Salty & Peppers have.
It was chewing on a empty 4 litre plastic jug. It almost looked like it was using it in the same way a child’s uses their pacifier!
While I was taking shots of this very innocent pup.Pepper saw me from the other side of the bay & rushed in immediately to get me out of there!
I backed away & left them alone. I never knew the pup was laying down in the tall grass? It stood up when It heard me & thats when I spotted it.

SALTY

I was able to get out today and came across Salty down in the same bay that the carcass use to be in. I say “use” to be in because they woofed it all down!
Today looked like a resting day for Mum at least. Pepper was not around but I suspect he was over at the forests edge with the pups. I think he is alittle more shy than Salty?
Salty seems to be more relaxed around boats than Pepper.
The tide was dropping. I had to get as close as I could, which meant touching shore and you know what that means when the tide is going out!
I got stuck on the bottom. I knew I was going to but I couldn’t back away from this rare opportunity. Besides, my boat has wheels on it. So I am never really stuck!
I had a great shoot with her and am looking forward to the next opportunity!
The light failed almost immediately as I got out! I knew it would but wanted to get out anyways. Always great to get out and running into her made my day!!
I also came across two Harbour Seals hauled out on a rock, a Blue Heron and of course a few of my eagle friends!
A great outing considering the light situation and the fact that I hit a small piece of wood and spun my prop.
It happens from time to time. I’ll just get another prop and “Bob’s Your Uncle”!
UPDATE: Turns out I didn’t spin my prop but put tiny little gouges along the props edge and that produced bubbles, which in turn made the prop cavitate! I simply filed the edge down as smoothly as I could and voila, a new prop!
