I finally was able to get out after 6 days of twiddling my thumbs! It’s been cloudy & so the light was poor at best!
The tide was dropping & would hit low slack while I was up in Fortune Channel. I went straight up into Fortune Channel & came across a small bear very quickly!
It was a bit skittish & so didn’t hang around for very long. I searched further up the shore to the north but found nobody home. Some other Bear watching Zodiacs were up there watching bears as well. After they left I couldn’t find the bears they had been watching. I turned south & found “Big Red” & the twins,Teeny & Weeny. They all were in the shade unfortunately! I couldn’t do anything about it & so did the best with what I had.
Continued on to Tsapee Narrows to visit with the Daredevil. The sun was beginning to get low in the west. It’s about this time I noticed the full moon rising in the east behind me! I almost forgot about it! That was stupid of me! We’ve been having so much cloud lately that I wasn’t even thinking about it!
Said goodbye to my feathered friends & continued west into town. I wanted to find any eagle where I could back off & shoot it against the full moon! I couldn’t find anybody! I decided to continue on to Deadman Island to see Romeo & Juliette. The sun was starting to get obscured by some low cloud! I lost the light,so I decided to do some silhouettes!
Thats when I found one of the Lovekin eagles on a perfect perch to put the moon in behind him! The tide was ripping so trying to stay in the sweet spot to line them both up was very very tricky! Also,it was very hard to get the focus with the low contrast conditions. I found that I was getting frustrated & called it a night after shooting a few.
Wish I could of gotten more moon shots but my time window was gone! I only have 30 minutes or so when the moon’s contrast is perfect! Not too pale & not too bright! The “Goldilocks” zone!
Getting the Lovekin Eagle silhouetted in front of the full moon sure saved my butt tonight!

They weren’t flying any country flag. Which leads me to think they must of been American! Who else could afford something like this! I have no idea how much this boat cost, but I’m thinking half a mil at least! The wake coming off of this boat was MASSIVE!
She was set up for fishing. You have to have fairly deep pockets to afford a fishing boat like this!

A friend was driving this whale watching boat (Wayne Dolby). He came by at just the right moment & I asked him to pose with the boat. I loved that setting “fire” sun in the background but needed a foreground subject.
So he obliged happily! In hindsight,I should of handed out my business card to the folks! Never know if I could of made a sale?

The weather was perfect,so I grabbed my gear & got out for a evening shoot! I went up into Fortune Channel looking for bears but wasn’t too hopeful becasue the tide was high! I did come across this one bear but it stayed in the tall grass & didn’t come out into the open! A bit shy maybe?
I also was keeping a keen eye out for any Humpback whales!! They have been sighted up in Fortune recently & I was hoping to get lucky………but alas NO!
Went over into Gunner Inlet to look for any of my furry friends but no one was home unfortunately! Had my snack for the night while drifting quietly listening to all the birds surrounding me! I always enjoy these moments!
Finished my snack & started up the motor. Went to Tsapee Narrows to visit with the Daredevil. I noticed the sun was starting to turn colour? I knew instantly that we had forest haze blowing in & the sun’s colour would be very interesting tonight!
After a short visit with the Daredevil,I continued on into the harbour for the sunset. Went to Morpheus Island to visit with Moe & Maggie. Just Moe was around tonight. The wind was calm enough for some nice shots of Moe!
Continued onto Deadman Island for a visit with Romeo & Juliette. She was content to stay in a tree on the south island but Romeo was nice enough to come over for a few shots! A few friends came by in Kayak’s,so I asked them to hang around for some shots with that gorgeous “FIRE” sun that was happening!
Can never get enough shots like that!
Another fantastic evening shoot!

It was overcast & raining today,so I wasn’t even contemplating being able to get out!
However,it started to break around 7pm or so! I didn’t need to be asked twice,so I got my gear together & rushed out! I didn’t have alot of time tonight so I stayed around the harbour area!
When the sun came out it lit up the entire harhour in fantastic light! I couldn’t find much for subject matter, but it still worked out in the end!
Another surprising evenings shoot in beautiful Tofino folks!

This Catamaran is called the “BANANA SPLIT”………for obvious reasons!

Got out tonight & went straight up into Fortune Channel. I heard that there were some Humpback whales going up there! I went looking for them but alas came up empty handed! I did find two bears however! One in Fortune & another (Li’l Red) in Gunner Inlet.
They both seemed to be very interested in foraging along the shore line. After saying goodbye to “Li’l Red” in Gunner Inlet,I went to Tsapee Narrows to visit with the Daredevil. He was in fine form tonight!
Continued on to visit with Romeo & Juliette. Didn’t see Juliette, but Romeo was feeding “Sam” in the nest.
It was a great Tofino sunset tonight!
