You can tell molting is around the corner for my friend here The Daredevil. Look at the edges of his tail feathers. They should be round and smooth but instead look terrible!
when they are molting they struggle to fly. It takes more energy for my friends to come visit.
That tail tells me how far along into the molt they are. He is just starting. When you se one or two missing, the molt is upon them.
Thank you for the additional information, Wayne.
my pleasure Liz!
Fantastic photo, Wayne. As robertawrites noted, I don’t think I would have noticed the difference either until you pointed it out.
Hi Wayne, I’m not sure if I would have noticed that the feathers are raggedy without you pointing it out, but I could see it clearly.
If you hung around Eagles more, you’d notice.
This is the time of year to watch for feathers as they are dropping everywhere!
Sadly, I see eagles vicariously through you.
my eyes are getting worse, so you better squint!
Hahaha!
I wouldn’t have noticed either.

thank you Lynette. A eagles tail feathers is a good gauge on how the molting process is coming along.
Somehow I had never realized they molt!
Oh they certainly do!
I’ve seen and collected the feathers that drop!
A little raggedy, but he made a visit to see you nonetheless. That should make you feel pretty special.
yes but ever time they come over to me I smile broadly!
As you should Wayne since your feathered friend made a special trip, especially while feeling a little listless and lethargic from molting.
I did not notice the raggedy feathers at first glance. I hope the molting doesn’t take long.
about a month or so Jennie?
Thanks, Wayne.
Such beautiful photos. I admire your skill for photographing the creatures of this world. Nature is a passion for me.
thank you Peggy! Nature is always so fulfilling!
